Swedish luxury rug manufacturer Henzel Studio will launch a collection of hand knotted silk rugs and accompanying pillows that pays homage to Andy Warhol’s most iconic subject: Marilyn Monroe. In collaboration with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the limited edition collection is based on a rarely seen maquette for an unpublished artist’s book discovered in Warhol’s Time Capsule 55 in 1994.
Known to be a diary of his everyday personal and professional life, his Time Capsule collection comprises 610 cardboard boxes he filled and dated from 1974 until his death in 1987. Each of the thirty-eight octagonal pages of die-cut detail from Warhol’s print edition set of Marilyn Monroe has been re-appropriated and turned into a unique rug design. The original Monroe portraits have been further deconstructed and appropriated by Henzel Studio founder Calle Henzel, who applied freeform organic shapes, strategically placed holes, uneven punk-like fringes and elaborate surface treatments into five unique designs. The collection is set to launch November 29th at The Webster Miami Beach during Art Basel 2016.
