From the Manifesto for Milan to the exhibition in Piazza Duomo, from Eurocucina to the International Bathroom Exhibition. Featuring the interviews with the protagonists.
The 57th edition of the Salone del Mobile.Milano will take place from 17 to 22 April 2018 at Fiera Milano Rho, as announced during the press conference in the lecture hall of the Bocconi University by its President Claudio Luti, who expressed the willingness to go beyond the already established success: “We need to focus on innovation and sustainable quality, on our talent for creating a system and culture, on our willingness to share information.” This edition will entail a strengthening of the connection between the Salone and Milan, as explained in an unprecedented Manifesto. Giuseppe Sala, Mayor of Milan, defined the Salone as “a distinctive Milanese brand, the best expression of Milan’s enterprising, young, concrete and visionary spirit.”
Moreover, from 17 to 29 April, in front of Palazzo Reale, a pavilion designed by studio Carlo Ratti Associati will host an exhibition-installation dealing with the relationship between nature and living, providing important hints for green design.
In his intervention, Emanuele Orsini, President of Federlegno Arredo Eventi, highlighted that the unparalleled event represented by the Salone, is one of the most important moments for the development of the Italian system as a whole, not only for the companies belonging to the federation: “Its skill at designing worlds means that Italian design furniture holds some trump cards as regards sketching out the scenarios of the future.”
As a confirmation of this, Michele Scannavini, President of the Italian Trade Agency ICE, provided important data: exports grew 1.7% in 2017 on both the European and far-flung markets, such as China, where Italy has become the leading supplier of furniture.
As representatives of the design universe, also Stefano Boeri, Carlo Ratti and Fabio Novembre expressed their point of view.
SALONE DEL MOBILE.MILANO MANIFESTO
A declaration of intent between the Salone del Mobile and Milan has been launched. The ‘Salone’, as Milanese people call it in a rather affectionate and quick way, is not just the most important fair but also a system of connections, creativity and innovation that, during the whole week, attracts over 300,000 people, an event that conveys optimism and enterprise. Its organizational machine works on it all the year round along with the companies. For Milan’s citizens it is a tradition, for everybody a global experience. Overcome the division Salone/FuoriSalone (nowadays it is a Salone Diffuso – “Scattered Salone”), a new virtuous design – product – quality – innovation – city – value chain is created in just one place and moment. Milan represents a new model of metropolis, projected towards and open to the world with its dynamism. In fact, it does not have an only neuralgic center anymore but more spaces, flows and perspectives. Ten years ago, some people criticized the decentralization of the new fairgrounds designed by Massimiliano Fuksas, but the Salone del Mobile has won its challenge: it is connected to the heart of the city by the underground system and with the High Speed train that gets to Turin in 50 minutes, Bologna in 60 minutes and Florence in 100 minutes.
Now in its 22nd edition, EuroCucina will bring together 111 exhibitors and will unveil the future organization and evolution of the most strategic environment of our house, increasingly ‘fluid, orderly and professional’. The opening out into the living room is an established trend with modular containers and concealed work stations that appear only when home chefs need them. Materials and finishes: natural stone and coverings that replicate it, as well as wood and metal, are back. Colors reappear, also in very bright hues like purple and green.
FKT – Technology For the Kitchen For 7 editions, every two years, innovative domestic appliances have accompanied Eurocucina: in 2018 built-in appliances are increasingly connected and integrated. This collateral event will showcase new products, prototypes, concepts and visions. Smart Kitchens require efficiency, sustainability, consumption control, safety and ease of use, as well as entertainment. There will be also innovative in-home solar panels and ideas for water management in the kitchen.
INTERNATIONAL BATHROOM EXHIBITION
The bathroom has become a digital comfort zone, essential and sustainable. This exhibition is expanding and can rely on a wider exhibition area that, this year, will host 228 booths. Water saving, energy efficiency, use of recyclable materials and antibacterial finishes that cut down on the use of detergents are now possible for many manufacturers and a goal for many others, also thanks to pervasive and invisible technology.
The theme assigned to the 650 selected young designers is “Africa / Latin America: Rising Design – Design Emergente”, a really contemporary theme for the exhibition dedicated to international talents and design schools (with free public entry from Cargo 4 at Rho Fiera Milano). It will also include an exhibition dedicated to Latin America curated by the Campana brothers and another dedicated to Africa curated by Franco-Moroccan designer Hicham Lahlou, founder of the Africa Design Award & Days. Last but not least, also this year, there will be the SaloneSatellite Award facilitating the interface between business people and emerging designers, creativity and production.
