10,000 people visited the 3rd edition of the Materia Design Festival in Catanzaro, which awarded Ciabattino, the dish that makes it easier to mop up the sauce with bread

Born and raised in Catanzaro, the Materia Design Festival turned three in September 2018. The festival aims to create connections between local craftsmanship and design’s ability to innovate, calling international designers with Calabrian roots but also simply Italian and foreign designers.

This year, three young designers from Campania, Andrea Arpenti, Marco Stradolini and Tonia Petraglia from studio 400gon, have won the 1,000 Euro worth “Guglielmo Papaleo” research grant offered by the “Guglielmo” company for the 3rd edition of the Materia Independent Design Festival.

The winner of the third edition of the Materia Design Festival

The winning project, “Ciabattino” conquered the jury because “it combines tradition and innovation, and connects the design world with craftsmanship, solving a ‘functional’ problem for an everyday object. ‘Ciabattino’ (Italian word for ‘shoemaker’) is a dish that turns the so-called ‘scarpetta’ (the action of mopping up a dish with bread, but the word scarpetta literally means ‘small shoe’) into a rule, despite being an etiquette breach. Thanks to its double curve, the dish makes it easier to mop up the sauce with bread.

The numbers of the third edition of the Materia Design Festival

The creators of the Materia Independent Design Festival, architects Domenico Garofalo and Giuseppe Anania of Officine Ad, are very pleased:

In just 4 days 10,000 people visited the three venues – monumental complex of San Giovanni, Ex Stac and Museo Marca. Visitors and students in particular were very curious, marking the beginning of the collaboration with local schools. Catanzaro definitely has what it takes to become the reference point for Mediterranean design.

The fourth edition is scheduled for September 2019. [Text: Giuseppe D’Orsi]
