THE ENERGY OF EVERY FOOTSTEP, CAPTURED AND CONVERTED TO ELECTRICAL POWER

With over 150 projects around the world, across various sectors including train stations, shopping centers, airports and public spaces, Pavegen is the global leader in harvesting energy and data from footfall and one of the main protagonists of the transformation of Bird Street in London: from underutilized outdoor space to a haven of calm where visitors are able to enjoy a traffic-free shopping and dining experience in a sustainable environment.

The installation consists of special ‘tiles’ which convert footsteps into off-grid energy and incorporate Bluetooth low-energy transmitters which will enable them to interact with branded apps – for example rewarding users with discounts or vouchers for their steps on the Pavegen System. As people step on the tiles, their weight causes electromagnetic induction generators to vertically displace, which results in a rotatory motion that generates off-grid electricity to light up cities.

Pavegen – with the help of other brands and companies, such as Airlabs and its ClearAir bench (in photo) which removes nitrogen dioxide to create a zone of clear air – was able to transform Bird Street into the world’s first ‘Smart Street’ which showcases the future of high street and the related sustainable technologies.
