At MIFF – Malaysia International Furniture Fair, a Malaysian company specialized in outdoor furniture, SJY, has unveiled a product designed by Andrea Brugnera, an Italian designer based in Treviso. Andrea Brugnera, who has been working with his professional studio since 2009, was selected in 2015 for the Young&Design award and took part in an exhibition at the Triennale in Milan.
An unusual experience, as the designer himself explained. All the work, in fact, was done via email, without even a phone call.

Andrea Brugnera explains: “The company contacted me directly last year; they had found my site after a search and had found my profile interesting. They were looking for an outdoor product a bit out of the ordinary, and so I proposed Eggy, is a daybed for outdoor lifted from the ground and enclosed in an egg (Eggy), with a structure in powder-coated aluminum and lined with polyethylene rattan. Eggy’s inspiration comes from the “tree house”, a place where we all played as children, a safe haven with an enveloping shape. The company SJY contacted me by email at the end of September, and the whole project was developed by email, there was not even a need for conversation.

How was the work with a Malaysian company?
“Working with a Malaysian company has been a challenge, a challenge, but also a concern. Distance and cultural difference of the project I thought were difficult obstacles to overcome, but there was immediately mutual trust and this has made the relationship serene and precise even in the contractual and economic. As mutual were professionalism and enthusiasm. The time zone allowed me to work until night (although this did not coincide well with my position as a new dad) before delivering the various revisions on time, and then to have feedback already at the end of the morning the next day. In conclusion, I am very satisfied with the result”.
