“Reflections” is the theme of the Swiss Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai. The project, by Swiss studio OOS AG, invites visitors to discover Switzerland through images, sounds and interactive installations. Its aim is to offer visitors an emotional and multisensory spatial experience.

The Swiss Pavilion is inspired by the tents of Bedouin’s temporary camps in the desert; in this way, architecture connects the tradition of the past and the innovation of the future. The front façade of the Pavilion is built as a funnel-shaped mirror whose reflective surface draws visitors’ attention.

A visit in three acts

The exhibition path is divided into three acts, three moments inviting the audience to discover Switzerland – its traditions, culture, relation with nature. Besides tradition and nature, the Swiss pavilion expresses the commitment to a sustainable future through technology, innovation and science.

The first act takes place at the entrance: the people in line are reflected in the mirrored façade and change it, creating an interactive wall that disappears upon entering the pavilion.

Inside the pavilion, the second act stages the “unique experience of nature”. Visitors walk uphill through dense fog until they reach the top, where the surprising view of a breathtaking alpine panorama is revealed.

After traditional and nature-oriented Switzerland, the visit ends with the third act: “urban and innovative environment”. There, Switzerland presents itself both as a workshop dedicated to innovation and as a showroom for design, technology and science innovations.

Among the major challenges faced by OOS AG in the project for the Swiss pavilion there were the expected high density of people visiting the Expo and the diverse needs of international guests. The Swiss firm has met these challenges with user-oriented, innovative design, adjusting the architecture to the geographical and cultural diversity of the visitors in terms of function and emotions.
