The goal of the initiative is to show how urban regeneration projects can be used to promote and create culture in contemporary cities. Besides urban regeneration, other themes will be environmental sustainability, technological innovation and architectural recovery.

The second meeting, with Finnish studio JKMM Architects, will take place on Friday 30 September.

Moderated by Davide Gamba, member of the steering committee of the Foundation of Architects of Florence, the meeting will start with the welcome remarks by Silvia Ricceri, President of the Foundation of Architects of Florence, followed by speeches by Martin Joos, SIA International Committee, Piccarda Frulli, Deputy Director, Switzerland Tourism Italy, and Michele Coduri, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Switzerland in Italy. The core of the conference will be represented by Manuel Aires Mateus’s presentation. The architect of Lausanne’s Photo Elysée and mudac will talk about the project not only from an urban planning and architectural perspective, but also from the perspective of cultural, artistic and functional content.

An urban regeneration project aimed at revitalizing an area in Lausanne

The building presented by Aires Mateus in Florence is part of the transformation project of a disused area of the Lausanne station into a new public space dedicated to culture. There, the first building of the Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts (mcb-a), designed by Barozzi/Veiga, opened in 2019. By the end of 2023, the recovery of the railway viaduct arches is also scheduled to be completed. Stores, galleries and restaurants will be housed there to bring the neighborhood to life even during museum closing hours.

The conference is organised with the Patronage of the Embassy of Switzerland in Italy, the SIASwiss Society of Engineers and Architects, the SIA – Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects – International Section, the Chamber of Architects of Florence, and the Italian Council of Architects, with the participation of Lausanne Tourisme and Switzerland Tourism, and with the support of Operaprima srl. A wine tasting offered by Casale del Giglio will follow the conference. [Txt Arianna Callocchia, photography Matthieu Gafsou]
